In the News: World Cup Kayaking on the Chattahoochee River

World Cup Kayaking on the Chattahoochee River

Currently, the 2021 Olympics are underway, with quite a few medals left to be won. And as hopefuls compete, some of them benefit from the experience they earned from International Canoe Federation. As it turns out, our humble hometown may soon have a connection to Olympians past and present. How? Through World Cup Kayaking on the Chattahoochee River, starting in October 2022.

More on the event

Just over a year from now, kayaking competitors will travel to Uptown Columbus, GA to test their mettle. Three hundred of them, in fact!

Held by the International Canoe Federation, the World Cup Kayaking on the Chattahoochee River is a freestyle-based tournament. It includes two parts in the cup—so athletes need to train hard. The first part runs from October 3 to 5, 2022. Then, when the next weekend rolls around, the second cup will kick off from October 7 to 9.

Returning in 2023

They’ll be back! If you miss the competition, the same group will hold their Columbus World Championship in 2023. It will last from June 27 to July 1.

Did we mention that it’s also a big deal for the U.S.? The ICF has only held nine World Championships—and this one will mark the first to take place in America!

About the International Canoe Federation

People from all over the world can connect with their love of kayaking and canoeing. The International Canoe Federation works to bring those dedicated athletes—and cheering fans—together.

Though their international hub base sits in Lausanne, Switzerland, they also have national governing bodies. In the case of the United States, we have a main hub in Fredericksburg, Virginia. So, yes, they’re quite well-traveled! And next year, athletes can fly, drive, or even potentially kayak on down to Columbus.

Okay, probably not kayak. Still, did you know that the Chattahoochee River spans approximately 30 miles long? It runs from Georgia’s southern Appalachian Mountains to Lake Seminole, which is where Georgia meets Florida.

Summary

Don’t be too sad that the Olympics are ending in five days! World Cup Kayaking on the Chattahoochee River gives us something sporty to look forward to in 2022—and 2023. Mark it on your calendar!
