It's Tamale Time at Highside Market

Hot-tamale! A local favorite is set to open their second location in Columbus soon. You don’t want to miss out on the delicious Latin cuisine coming with It’s Tamale Time at Highside Market.

About It’s Tamale Time

It’s Tamale Time is a Phenix City-based tamale shop owned and operated by Chef J.R. McKinny and his wife Barre. They began their business in 2018 selling tamales at farmers markets in Panama City.

After the catastrophic damage left behind by Hurricane Michael, Chef J.R. McKinny and his family moved to the Chattahoochee Valley area. Continuing to sell tamales at local farmers markets, they officially opened their first It’s Tamale Time location on Cinco de Mayo in 2022.

Paying homage to the chef’s late Maw Maw Subia, this restaurant honors his heritage as well as filling the void of good Latin food in the area.

According to reports, not long after opening this first location, they were approached by the real estate development and investment firm The Cotton Companies about opening a second location at the Highside Market in Columbus.

Chef J.R. noted how opening a new location can be scary, but he felt that Highside Market was in line with what he sees as the future of It’s Tamale Time–making the area a better place.

Highside Market is a transformative development in Columbus. This development will serve as a hub for dining, retail, office and event spaces. You can read more about Highside Market here.
